ARCHITECTURAL FIRMS RECEIVE 2009 DESIGN AWARDS FROM
THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS, ALASKA CHAPTER
Anchorage,
Alaska (September 21, 2009) – AIA Alaska, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) is
pleased to announce the 2009 AIA Alaska Design Awards for Excellence in
Architecture, the professions highest recognition for work that exemplifies
excellence in architecture, interior architecture and urban design.
The AIA Alaska Design
Awards Program was established in 1965 to promote community awareness of great
designs being developed by Alaskan architects. For the past 44 years, these
annual design awards have recognized buildings that both satisfy the needs of
the user and significantly contribute to a stimulating built environment
Architects throughout
Alaska annually submit Alaska projects they feel are exceptionally responsive
to their clients' needs or exhibit design excellence above and beyond competent
design.These submittals include
a
description of the project, architectural drawings and photography.To ensure the judging of the awards is
unbiased, AIA Alaska Design Awards are judged by AIA representatives from
another state's chapter.
Selected from 16
submissions, three projects were recognized at the 2009 AIA Alaska State
Convention, held in conjunction with the AIA Northwest and Pacific Region
Conference last week at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage. Three members of
the AIA Japan Chapter served as the 2009 jury panel.
Awards were given to projects that best exemplify northern design requirements,
sustainability, site/context sensitivity, and innovative design.
Eielson AFB Chapel Center, submitted
by kpb Architects; and the Renovation and Addition of the
Fairbanks International Airport Terminal Improvement Project, submitted
by Bettisworth North Architects and Planners, Inc both received theHONOR Award.
TheMorris Thompson Cultural and
Visitors Center, in Fairbanks - also submitted by Bettisworth North Architects
and Planners Inc, received the MERIT
Award.
