ARCHITECTURAL FIRMS RECEIVE 2009 DESIGN AWARDS FROM THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS, ALASKA CHAPTER

Anchorage, Alaska (September 21, 2009)AIA Alaska, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) is pleased to announce the 2009 AIA Alaska Design Awards for Excellence in Architecture, the professions highest recognition for work that exemplifies excellence in architecture, interior architecture and urban design.

The AIA Alaska Design Awards Program was established in 1965 to promote community awareness of great designs being developed by Alaskan architects. For the past 44 years, these annual design awards have recognized buildings that both satisfy the needs of the user and significantly contribute to a stimulating built environment

Architects throughout Alaska annually submit Alaska projects they feel are exceptionally responsive to their clients' needs or exhibit design excellence above and beyond competent design.  These submittals include a description of the project, architectural drawings and photography.  To ensure the judging of the awards is unbiased, AIA Alaska Design Awards are judged by AIA representatives from another state's chapter.

Selected from 16 submissions, three projects were recognized at the 2009 AIA Alaska State Convention, held in conjunction with the AIA Northwest and Pacific Region Conference last week at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage. Three members of the AIA Japan Chapter served as the 2009 jury panel.

Awards were given to projects that best exemplify northern design requirements, sustainability, site/context sensitivity, and innovative design.

Eielson AFB Chapel Center, submitted by kpb Architects; and the Renovation and Addition of the Fairbanks International Airport Terminal Improvement Project, submitted by Bettisworth North Architects and Planners, Inc both received the HONOR Award.

The Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center, in Fairbanks - also submitted by Bettisworth North Architects and Planners Inc, received the MERIT Award.
